Guide to applying for WebTraderUK status

Before applying to become a WebTraderUK member, please read the following three checklists. In order for your application to be accepted you must fulfill the criteria for all of them.

1.WebTraderUK Checklist 1 – What you must do

Make sure you can answer ‘yes’ to the following questions.
  • Do you trade online? For the purposes of the WebTraderUK scheme this means your web site contains a buying process which allows the selection and purchase of goods and services from it.
  • Do you display your full contact details clearly on your site? These must include your address, e-mail, phone number and fax if you have one.
  • Are your prices displayed in £ Sterling?
  • Do you clearly tell customers about delivery times and prices?
  • Do you clearly tell customers about their right to cancel? (if they have one).
  • Do you send customers a confirmation email (with the price, order number etc) after they have placed their order?
  • Do you ask for credit card details within a fully secure area only?
  • Do you have a statement telling customers what security measures you take?
  • Do you have a privacy policy displayed on your site.
  • Unsolicited commercial e-mail. You must not send untargeted mass-marketing emails to people you've never had any contact with before. You should obtain the consent of your customers to receive marketing email from you or from others.
  • Can your customers access your full Terms and Conditions before they buy?
  • Do you give consumers the contact details where they can make a complaint? This can be the same as your main contact details
2.WebTraderUK Checklist 2 – What you must not do.

In order to become a WebTraderUK member, you must not:
  • Send unsolicited commercial e-mail. You must not send untargeted mass-marketing emails to people you've never had any contact with before. You should obtain the consent of your customers to receive marketing email from you or from third parties.
3.WebTraderUK Checklist 3 - Code of Practice.

Read the WebTraderUK Code of Practice in full. Before applying to become a WebTraderUK member, you must make sure you comply with it fully.

Application Stages

If you are sure you fulfill the criteria for the three checklists, we welcome your application to become a WebTraderUK member. Details of the application stages are provided below.

Stage 1

Fill in the application form and post to WebTraderUK, 18a King Street, Maidenhead, Berkshire, SL6 1EF with your membership fee.

Fees: The normal application fee is £350 + VAT, but during the current launch period this is reduced to £250 + VAT (Total £293.75). Also, during the launch period, multiple websites may be registered for this fee for the first year only. In subsequent years, a small additional fee will be applied for multiple websites.

You will then receive an email acknowledging your application and explaining what will happen next.

Stage 2

Checks will be carried out to see that your website complies with the requirements in the WebTraderUK Code of Practice.

Stage 3

If your site meets the Code requirements, your application will automatically progress to Stage 5. If however, your company needs to make adjustments to fulfill the requirements you will be notified by an email listing the required adjustments. You must advise us when you have made the necessary changes.

Stage 4

Once you have notified us of the changes you have made, we will verify this by re-checking your website.

Stage 5

When your application is accepted you will be notified by email giving details of the site requirements including the HTML code to be used to display the WebTraderUK logo. At this point you will be asked to send us a copy of your company's logo in gif format to be displayed on the WebTraderUK site. The gif should be 150 pixels wide or less. Your company's name will be added to the alphabetical listing on the WebTraderUK site.

When the site requirements have been fulfilled your entry on the WebTraderUK site will include your logo, a description of your business and a link to your company website

NB. You are not authorised to display the WebTraderUK logo until all the stages above are completed. When you are authorised consumers will know that they can shop online with confidence at your website.
